An appreciation of the ‘styleless’

By Robert Ross

“Metal furniture is part of a modern room. It is styleless.”  —Marcel Breuer, 1928

Bauhaus instructor Marcel Breuer’s chair was a first of its kind. Brilliantly conceived, with a bent tubular steel frame and fabric slings for the seat, back, and arms, the chair was so admired by Bauhaus art professor Wassily Kandinsky that Breuer made a duplicate for that painter’s campus residence. It became the “Wassily Chair,” and rare originals are valued well upward of $20,000. I spent a year’s savings to buy a pair upon graduating college; more than 40 years later, we at RossMadrid are still enjoying them. Fellow admirers can find the chair in a range of colors at Knoll, which continues the production of authorized, licensed versions.
